Proper Hair Maintenance

For men, the proper hair maintenance goes beyond just washing the hair and running a quick comb or brush through it. It is important to use the correct products, take care of your scalp and get regularly scheduled haircuts. One of the products that most men don't use but need to is conditioner. Conditioners are one of the keys to having a healthy scalp which in turn yields healthy hair.

Most gels are not a good thing for hair depending on the brand you own because it blocks up the scalp causing the scalp to be unable to breathe. The stiffer the product is, the worse it is for you hair. On average, you should be getting a haircut anywhere from one month to six weeks.

For women, you must be careful about wearing pigtails, cornrows or using tight rollers. Each of those tug on your hair which in turn causes a kind of hair loss. If you are currently doing this, stop right now and make sure that no scarring has developed on your scalp. If it has not, then the hair should grow back naturally. Scarring can result in a possible loss of hair.

3 Ways to Prevent Hair Loss

1. Use of Chemicals - while it may be cheaper to do it yourself with chemical treatments, it is bad for your hair in the long run because you are likely to apply too much of the product. If you are intent on enhancing your hair chemically, it is best to have the job done by a licensed professional.

2. Eat Healthy - it is very important to get the right mixture of nutrients and not too much of certain types of vitamins to help you maintain your hair. Omega-3 and Omega-6 have been shown to have importance for healthy hair along with B-vitamins.

3. Change Your Pillow Cases - switch out your cotton or flannel pillowcase for something that is silky or satiny. This will cause less friction to your hair while sleeping and help to prevent hair loss.

Remember that no matter how healthy you are, each of us lose a certain amount of hairs from our head each day. If for any reason you feel your hair loss is above and beyond the norm, be sure to consult with a doctor or dermatologist to determine if there is a more serious problem that might be causing your hair loss that needs to be addressed.
