With the big push in society for going green and as people look for ways to cut costs and reduce expenses in the current economic conditions, there are several ways around the house that you can effectively kill two birds with one stone by making several changes to some your current items around the house. One of the ways to do this is to install solar lighting to take advantage of the many benefits that come from using them.

The costs to use them are nil because the sun is doing all of the work for you. They are very easy to maintain because they have few working parts that need to be taken care of or that you need to worry about them breaking. They also last a very long time and once they are installed, you can forget about them most part.

Best of all, if you are big on helping the environment, solar lighting does not in any way contribute to global warming. Because the lights do not use any type of electricity, they are never hot so you need not worry about kids or any type of animals touching them and getting a burn or rash.

Additional Benefits of Solar Lighting

One of the nice features of solar lights is that you never have to worry about turning them on or off at night. No longer do you have to go away for a ballgame or a concert, forget to set the lights and then come home to a dark house outside. With solar lights, the sensors inside will always work to turn the lights on or off automatically for you.

Also, if there is any type of power outage or something of that nature, the solar lights are still going to continue working for you because they are not part of any type of electrical grid.

Because the solar lights work from the sun that is caught and then reused, there are not any lines or cables running through the house or any type of power supply or outlets that you need to worry about having in place, like you do when you set Christmas lights outside.

How Solar Lights Work

In a nutshell, solar lights take the energy from the sun and convert in later into electricity which is stored in the batteries. Once it becomes dark, the lights will turn on automatically thanks to the sensors inside. Solar lights work great for the outdoors in a wide variety of ways. They can be used to light the porch, light walkways, light up a nice garden or tree in the backyard, as a security floodlight for the different sides of the house and in many other areas as well.

Types of Outdoor Solar Lights

1. Solar Porch Lights – these are nice because you no longer have to worry about turning the lights on or off at night. If you go away for a vacation, there is no need to worry about setting timers or other configurations for the lights to go on at night; it is automatically done for you. Some people when they go away leave the outdoor lights on all day long which can be a signal to criminals that you are not home and may be out of town. With solar lights, that is no longer a concern.

2. Solar Path Lights – these lights help to create a nice view for walking on a path or sidewalk up to the front or side porch. Usually they are on stakes which can be easily put into the ground and a sold in package so you get several at a time. It is a good way to help give people visiting your home at night some additional guidance as they make their way to the door, especially if you have an uneven sidewalk or some bumpy parts of the road.

3. Solar Security Lights – these lights work great to keep exterior areas of the house lit where the normal lights may not be able to reach. They help cover any gaps you may have in the external lighting to keep any possible criminals from trying to hid or work on breaking in to your house. If you can find something with a motion sensor on it, those are even better.

4. Solar Garden Lights – if you have a nice garden or tree that you want to illuminate at night, then solar garden lights can do the trick. They can bring out some pretty colors in the dark that will make you the envy of neighborhood.

Downsides of Solar Lights

Because the solar lights work because of the sun, if you are in areas with bad climate or where it is often cloudy, it might be a challenge getting the lights to work or last for a long time. Fully charged solar lights may be able to last as long as half of a day or more, depending on the type and brand of product that you purchase.

Buying Solar Lights

You will notice when shopping that most outdoor solar lights use LED’s, which stands for light emitting diode. One LED typically equates in brightness to two watts on a bulb. So if you are looking for a stronger light that will shine brightly, then you will want a light with a higher LED number.   Because LED’s are not bulbs, they will typically have a life span of up to 20 years so there is no need to worry about replacing them at any time.
