It can be quite a difficult decision when it comes to deciding on what type of window treatments you want for your house. Especially with a lot of the newer modern houses these days, the costs to have vertical blinds, or plantation shutters or some other type of blinds can quickly add up to several thousand dollars. Having some type of protection on your windows is of benefit not only to you but to your furniture as well.

Direct exposure to sunlight is never good, even if you are inside the house, your skin can still be affected. Also, your furniture as well as certain types of wood flooring can be impacted by exposure to sunlight over long periods of time as well. If you are looking for a solution outside of drapes, curtains or blinds, then you also have the option of going in the direction of window tinting to help give you the protection that you need.

The Life of Window Tinting

Most types of window film will typically have a warranty of 10 years. There have been cases where window film has lasted up to 20 years, but that takes into account many different factors. Depending on the type of glass the film is being applied to, the weather and climate and the type of film that is being used, there could be a wide range of times that the tint will last when comparing one house to another.

Benefits of Home Window Tinting

In addition to helping protect your skin and furniture, there are other benefits to window tinting in the home as well. The solar window film that is applied works to absorb almost 70% of the heat that could possibly come into your home.

By blocking the heat with the film, it also helps to save you money in your wallet by keeping air conditioning bills in check during the hot summer months. This comes in handy if you live in southern states during May – September.

The government has also recognized the important that window tinting has on the environment by offering tax credits in the past for people that use tint on their windows. If this something you plan on doing in the near future, be sure to look into any types of possible rebates that may be available to you.

If you ever have a broken window from the outside, the window film will keep glass from coming into the inside of the house. It can help to reduce the risk of injury as well as the amount of damage that your property could possibly sustain.

Types of Window Tinting

Some people want the benefits of the window tinting but are looking for something a little more stylish. There are several different types of window tint if you are looking to spruce up the look of the windows.

1.       Decorative window film – if you want to have a nice stained glass like you might see in a church without paying the cost to have new glass installed, then decorative window film is a good option.

2.       Static  window film – if you are looking to save on cost and want a material that can be sued many times over, then static window film is an option. It does however have some drawbacks. It does not present as nice of a look when viewed from the outside as traditional window tinting. It also tends to get dirty faster because the static tends to attract dust and dirt.

3.       Solar control window film – if you are looking for traditional window film that is going to reduce heat and glare as well as protect the inside of your home, then solar window film is the way to go.

Costs of Home Window Tinting

When it comes to buying window tint, it best to go with a professional brand that most installers use, rather than trying to go the budget route. Costs will generally run from two to three dollars per square foot and the tint can be can be applied by you if you like doing DIY projects. Otherwise if you are not up to the task, you can hire a professional installer to take care of it for you.

If you go the professional install route, the cost will run anywhere from five to seven dollars per square foot, roughly 2 ½ times the cost compared to if you would do the work yourself.

Remember though that the cost is not like most window treatments where you pay and do not get anything back. After several years, the money you have paid for the window tinting will have been canceled out by the dollar savings from your energy bills.

Tinting the windows on your house definitely reduces the heat inside the house, and lowers the cost of AC during the summer. There is less glare inside the house from the sun rays. It is also a great way to reduce break ins and peeping toms!
