There is nothing worse as a home owner that feeling that you have no room for storage in the house and that the rooms are too cluttered, leaving you with a feeling of claustrophobia. It is especially true in the garage where a lack of garage storage can mean leaving your car outside in the driveway and a cluttered mess that prevents you from reaching tools or needed items that are tucked away in random places. There are so many options for storage in the garage that anything you need to have put away, there is some type of option available for that. From garage organizers, ranging from garage cabinets, shelving, track systems and storage bins, there is literally thousands of choices to store the largest or smallest items. Here is a look at some of the storage options available to you.

Garage Shelving

There are several options available for garage shelving from installing your own wooden shelves, to using wire or metal shelves to store either heavier or lighter items. Even if you are not big into DIY projects, installing your own wooden shelving is not a difficult job and it can be accomplished with minimal tools. The most important aspect of the installation is making sure you have the correct height so it will not interfere with car doors opening and the garage door metal railings and that the shelves are level so items when place above will not be in danger of sliding off. It is also key to make sure not to space the brackets out too far underneath the wood or else the wood will become bowed under the weight and form the shape of a “U” which does not create a pretty look when you are trying to maintain a cleaner more organized look in the garage.

Garage Cabinets

There are many choices when it comes to garage cabinets, from making your own custom made metal cabinets, or hanging custom cabinets on the walls or even having cabinets with rollers underneath that can easily slide in and out underneath work benches if you have room for that. The options for garage storage are only limited to a narrow focus when you are in the planning stages. There are numerous companies in the garage storage arena and each of them offer unique features which may or may not work with your garage depending on the square footage of the space.

Chemicals

The garage is also the place where you are going to want to store chemicals and paints to keep them away from small children. Having the proper storage in the garage means you have to worry less about the kids reaching chemicals in the house where they might be easier to get at compared to up high on a shelf in the garage or in a locked cabinet. Things that you would store include items such as auto fluids, pest sprays, old paint cans and possibly some poisons.

Safety First

In addition to storing chemicals, the proper garage storage solutions wil ensure that tools are properly secured so little children cannot get poked or cut or injured even worse by a sharp object or an electric tool. Be sure to have ladders snug against the wall with a hook and not leaning which a child can trip over or have fall on them. Keeping extension cords wrapped up and hung on the wall keeps them away from young children and their necks which could prevent a choking hazard. There are numerous accidents that happen every year when the parents are working outside and the kids are playing in the garage and suddenly an accident occurs because of a lack of proper storage. Don’t let your family get added to that statistic anytime in the future.
